As you can see, Irezumi tattoos are done manually with rod. The rod has a steel tip (traditionally bamboo) with multiple needles and the way in which the rod is maneuvered, it's as if the needles go into and under the skin.

MOAR TATTOOS (IREZUMI)
Irezumi is a Japanese word that refers to the insertion of ink under the skin to leave a permanent decorative mark. Traditional Irezumi work is done by hand with bamboo needles and is honestly, a painstaking and long process not to mention pricey too. A full body piece would take an average of 10-15 years and may cost in excess of $35000. Irezumi works tend to last longer on your skin due to its different tattooing technique as the needles go deeper into the skin and the ink is deposited deeper. The tattooing process is a lot more painful and a lot slower as compared to tattoos done by a tattooing machine.
