Mezzanine Floor

What is a mezzanine floor?
A mezzanine floor is an elevated steel platform. It is a profitable way to better make use of the space. It effectively doubles or thriples the floor area and can provide the users with a much bigger area to work with. This also allows for better segregation in the production line and allows for better and more efficient organization.
3-tier mezzanine flooring

temporary mezzanine flooring

Advantages

  • encourages organization as different parts of the production line can be segregated into different levels.
  • fully maximizes the potential of an area to its fullest
  • relatively cheaper as compared to finding alternative locations for expansion
  • can be easily installed.

Disadvantages

  •  only applies to workshops with a high enough ceiling which can accommodate at least two levels.
  • mezzanine floors do not have huge weight bearing capabilities, hence heavier machinery would have to be on the first floor. So this idea may not be feasible for workshops or factories that require a larger amount of heavy machinery.

Creating a multipurpose storage/worktable

A multi purpose workdesk/ storage facility provides the user with conveniences a conventional work desk cannot. It doubles as a working area and a storage area. With certain tools stored directly under the desk, the user will not  have to walk to retrieve tools from his storage area. This in turn frees up space from his storage area and this free space can be converted into more working area. This idea would benefit small workshops greatly as it saves up alot of space.

Site : Ceramic workshop ( NAFA )

Site : 3D Workshop ( NAFA )

By comparison, the 3D workshop is bigger and  alot more spacious as compared to the ceramics workshop. But more work can be done with regards to the storage issues faced by both workshops. Hence a multipurpose work desk which could double up as a storage area would definitely aid in providing more storage space.

  1. Decrease the current class sizes so as to provide more working space and a more conducive working environment for all workshop users.
  2. Source for more funding so as to construct bigger workshops to cater to heavier workshop usage.
  3. Extra funding would also provide a means to acquire better, more advanced equipment so as to increase work capacity and efficiency.
  4. Lengthen workshop-operating hours to cater to students with night classes and to generally provide more time slots so as to regulate workshop occupancy.
  5. A larger working area will also provide a larger storage area so as to prevent the misplacement of work tools, haphazard placement of equipment that could endanger users and will help in reducing the margin of diminishing returns.
  6. Structure school projects in a way where students will not have to use complicated equipment so as to decrease general workshop usage.
  7. With the advent of machines capable of replicating work done by humans with higher speed and efficiency, machines can replace workers and this will both increase the efficiency of work done and decrease the margin of error in the manufacturing process.
  8. Segregate working areas within a workshop so that select actions and procedures can be carried out at select areas.
  9. This will prevent over occupancy of a selected area and generally increase productivity, as the time spent by an occupant at an area at any one time will be decreased. Space will be freed up for other would be users to carry out a designated procedure which would in turn deter the hogging of work stations.
